Thoughts from Debbie Crane

I have noticed that advancing age is an advantage in counseling work. It has given me a chance to transcend my own traumatic experiences and learn first-hand what it takes to move on through hardship no matter what the circumstances are. I feel like I can work best with people when I can identify in myself something like what they are going through. That way, I have a better chance to KNOW what they are feeling and I have a better chance to give them the tools they need to overcome their problems and move on.

Over time I have developed some ideas that help me to help others. They include the following principles:

If it is possible in the world, it is possible for you; it is only a matter of how.
By this I mean that if anyone anywhere has ever done what you want to do, then you can do it too. It is simply a matter of learning how it can be done. (If it is not possible, for example, flying to the moon with home-made wax wings, then it is time to re-evaluate your goal and make it something that IS humanly possible.) Then you go about finding the help you need to learn how to do it.

Before you speak, ask yourself 3 questions: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?
Make sure you can answer yes to all three questions. If not, keep your mouth shut. Do not stir the pot just to have something to say. Recognize the power in keeping quiet and leaving things unsaid.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am for myself alone, what am I? And if not now, when?
This quote is my greatest motivator. It reflects balanced focus. Partly for you. Partly for others. But wherever we are on that question, it reminds us that now is the time to act.
